Description

A solid piece of JCM goodness, executed at an interesting time in his career. Murphy's style was changing , an evolution which built on his excellent sense of anatomy and movement, becoming increasingly sophisticated and modern. His famously semi-impressionistic inking became more disciplined and intentional, his use of shifting pov's more varied, his posing of groups and body attitudes more dynamic. Simple things like hand gestures, facial renderings, and the draping of clothes, became highly suggestive of motion and drama. His development was in some ways an adoption of current advertising illustrative techniques, which could be seen as a prelude to the arrival of Neal Adams on Ben Casey a year later, who became the ultimate histrionic expression of that Johnstone and Cushing school on his way to DC and the Batman revolution he would unleash.
