Description

I should preface this by saying that as little as a year ago, I would never have even thought about trying to win this page. What changed, you might ask? Well, my wonderful boyfriend, Connor, decided he wanted to start reading through the Legionnaires comics! When he got to this Legion annual, he mentioned that his favourite part of it was this DPS, the schematics of Legion HQ. I thought that was very on-brand for him, but didn't think any more of it until we were reading through another Legion comic a few months later. I remarked that I didn't recognize what part of the Legion HQ they were in, and Connor tabbed out to his desktop, clicked on a file, and PULLED UP AN IMAGE he had saved of this schematic, which he had apparently been referencing as he was reading through the Legionnaires series. And in case you were wondering, that is ABSOLUTELY a marryable offence, in my book.

A little after that incredible moment, the original art for the DPS showed up at ComicLink. Where normally I would say "yeah, that's not in the budget" and move on, this time it was a little different. It was Connor's favourite page. He and I came up with a plan: we would pool our budgets (with the plan to split the final cost of the page), and hope that that gave us enough of an edge to win it... and we did!!! Today, in honour of Connor opening his very own CAF account, I am proud to present the schematics for the Legion Headquarters we all know and love from the Reboot era!

This piece is just... so far beyond cool. LSH Annual 6 consisted of a framing sequence interspersed with Legion origin stories, profiles on each member, and five pages dedicated to showcasing the Legion's headquarters, equipment, and affiliated buildings. Those five pages were drawn by one Eliot R. Brown, who, from a quick look at CAF, seems to be a go-to artist for when writers wanted to include schematics and diagrams in their comics. I know he certainly knocked this page out of the park. He first drew the HQ schematic on a single piece of artboard, then turned it into a larger stat and pasted it across two pages, which is why it appears as a DPS in the published comic. Both DPS pages have transparent overlays taped to them, onto which Brown pasted the title, legend, and corresponding little numbers. You can see individual scans of both the single-page original art and the double-page pasteup in the additional images.

I'd really suggest you take a moment and have a look at how detailed and thought-out these blueprints are. I'm not sure how often the main series artists - Jeff Moy and Lee Moder - would reference this, but Jeff's pretty sure either he or Lee came up with the design, and then Eliot converted it into a proper blueprint. To the best of my knowledge, there have only been three instances of published Legion HQ blueprints in comics - one in the 1982 Annual, this one here, and one done to showcase the new Legion Outpost in Legion: Secret Files #1. This really feels like owning a piece of Legion history.

Some fun details I really appreciate: the writers and artists remembered to include rooms for the Athramites (these cute little bug-like aliens who design the Legion's costumes and other equipment), Tenzil Kem the chef gets his own quarters, and Shvaughn Erin, the Legion's liaison to the Science Police, gets her own office, too. Also, you can tell an impressive amount of thought went into deciding how the sleeping/living quarters were divided, since each one could house two Legionnaires. Best friends Chameleon and Invisible Kid share theirs, while the Kinetix/Leviathan suite is the only one to feature a girl/boy pairing - pointing both to Kinetix's outgoing, flirty nature, and her giant crush on the equally giant Leviathan. Shy Shrinking Violet, brusque, xenophobic Andromeda, and curt, unsociable Brainiac 5 are all the sole occupants of their own suites. Brainy's is notably the farthest from any other occupied suite, and the closest to his lab, presumably so he can have as few interpersonal interactions as possible during the walk between them.

As of this writeup, the page is tucked safely away in a portfolio, but we've got plans to frame it, and I'll update the additional images once that day comes.
