DescriptionI've had a hard time putting my thoughts together regarding this piece and what owning it means to me. Let's get through the obvious points: gorgeous Art Adams pencil work, a huge 17x21 double page splash on a single sheet of paper, more dead X-Men than you can shake a stick at, the fact it was also used as the 2nd print cover of issue #2, etc etc. All those wonderful facts have made this piece very special to me indeed, however this mini-series, it's struggles, failures, successes and timing are what really make this piece a true personal grail in every sense of the word.Way back in 2010 life was literally kicking the shit out of me and had been for at least six months prior. I had been off and on with comics for the previous decade and the personal hardships had left me grasping for some kind of comfort. Comics had always been that for me growing up and even though I had lapsed in my collecting and reading over the years my love for the medium had never faltered. At the time I was making an effort to get back into the scene, figure out what was good and what was coming up and what I might like to read. More importantly, I needed to get caught up on my old-standby and lifetime love, the X-Men. I had never understood or had time to get into the Ultimate line of books, I could barely keep up with Uncanny and adjectiveless X-Men let alone learn about a completely new universe. But when I walked into my LCS and started asking questions they recommended I give Ultimate X #1 a try. It would be the starting point for a whole new era of X-stories and would tout Art Adams interiors in what was then thought to be a bi-monthly ongoing series. That picqued my interest. Although it was picking up after the debacle that was Ultimatum it promised a fresh start and was guaranteed to look awesome. It sounded like just the tonic I needed to take my mind off the real world for 30 minutes or so. And so it did, when it actually came out. Despite the delays and failed promises it was still the highlight of my comic reading that year and I still come back to it over and over just to enjoy the art and the ideas of what might have been if it continued on. If you made it this far through what is probably my longest description ever, then I apologize and thank you for taking the small journey back in time with me. I predict I'll be framing this piece very soon and gazing at all these incredible lines Art laid down for many a year to come. Social/Sharing |
