DescriptionEssentially unpublished, Stuntman 3 was a B&W, short page count issue mailed out to subscribers only. I assume this page was either stored in the Harvey warehouse or held by Joe Simon. In any case, it appears to be pure Kirby, albeit working very fast & loose. It's from late 1945 or beginning of 1946, with Jack just back from the real fighting in Europe. His choreography is crystal clear as usual, and it feels like the energy level of the page is even jumping up a notch from the pre-war hero books. In panel 3, Stuntman shoves a bad guy right through a telephone pole-sized support column, then punches him through another one (guy had a tough noggin, apparently), and demolishes the saloon door on his way out (he's in a hurry, see). It's a nicely composed page, with all the left-hand panels throwing the viewer's eye to the right, and the top two right hand panels shoving us right back, like trading blows, and also down to the tier below. The final panel has Stuntman counter the straight horizontal thrust of panel five while also piquing our interest for the turn of the page with an animated pair of diagonal shadows at far right. I'm very pleased to have this example of high S&K style from the Golden Age! EDIT 7/23 As Bruce Younger notes in the comments, this story, titled "Rest Camp for Criminals" was eventually published in Green Hornet Fights Crime 39, May 1948. Also of note for dating the story: a group of S&K invoices auctioned at Heritage in 2013 includes one from Jack authorizing his own payment for pencilling a 12 page Stuntman "rehabilitation story". This is the only Stuntman story that fits that description. See additional images for panel evidence and the invoice.Social/Sharing |
