DescriptionFor those acquainted with my tastes, it's needless to reiterate that Alex Raymond has always held the top spot as my favorite artist. However, a lesser-known fact, until now, is that José Luis Salinas, alongside the incomparable Edgar P. Jacobs, occupies a cherished position as my second favorite artist.Salinas's mastery over his lines and the overall composition of his original works, steeped in the romanticism of bygone eras, is a true feast for my eyes and soul. His art serves as a portal, transporting me through time to partake in daring adventures alongside the valiant Hernan. Recently, fortune smiled upon me as I had the immense privilege to acquire the final page of Hernan's adventures—a poignant moment marked by a long-awaited kiss. This exquisite page features nearly all of Hernan's beloved companions: Don Miguel, Carmen, Small Jack, and his faithful friend Taick. A brief delve into history reveals José Luis Salinas as a self-taught Argentine cartoonist whose notable works include "Hernán el Corsario" and "Cisco Kid." His artistic journey commenced in 1929, with forays into "Páginas de Columba" and "El Tony" before delving into advertising. In 1936, he made his mark in Patoruzú magazine with his inaugural cartoon production, displaying unwavering dedication to "Hernán el Corsario." In 1941, Salinas, through Percy Foster, caught the attention of King Features Syndicate in Argentina, harboring dreams of securing a worldwide distributed strip. While his work received accolades, the outbreak of war prevented expansive contracts. Post-World War II, Salinas journeyed to the United States in 1949, presenting his work to King Features Syndicate once more, leading to the creation of "Cisco Kid," with scripts penned by Rod Reed—an unprecedented feat for an Argentine artist among the American greats. In 1976, Salinas was honored with the Yellow Kid award, a testament to his enduring legacy and prolific career. ¡Historia del noveno arte sin duda! Social/Sharing |
