DescriptionIn 1952 Wally Wood was at the top of his game and in great demand as the Best Science Fiction artist in comics. Woody was asked by Will Eisner to illustrate a Spirit in Outer Space storyline. Wood's art for the story was superb and made the storyline a classic!This cover splash is a gorgeous example of the penultimate Wood spaceman. It was created on huge, EC sized golden age art board, and the art is super clean. This work was done about the same time he was meeting EC deadlines for Weird Science and Weird Fantasy issues 11 or 12. I could not be more thrilled to add this art to my collection! This fantastic page is 100% pure Woody - all pencilled, inked and even lettered by Wood. If anybody tells you otherwise, don't believe it! I was lucky enough to find a copy of the original 9/7/1952 pulp Spirit Section giveaway comic out in a CBG ad back in 1982 when i was building my EC collection (those original Spirit in Space sections are truly rare as hen's teeth btw), so I have marveled at this image for over 40 years. Now I have the joy of holding the art in my hands! A special thanks to Bernard for putting this in the Heritage auction. I admired it from afar for a long time before it traveled back across the ocean to me. Social/Sharing |
