DescriptionThe Jokerfish plate from Marshall Rogers’ 1981 Batman portfolio hung in my room for most of my teen years. When I started collecting original art, I knew the only realistic option was a commission. And as it was Lynn Varley’s uncredited painted colors over Rogers’ pencils and inks that gave that piece its haunting depth, the commission had to be a painting.But I did not simply want a re-creation. So, after Myles absolutely nailed my Rorschach piece last year, I knew he could capture the spirit of Rogers’ work while still making something entirely his own. Oil painting takes years to master, and each piece demands hours of preliminary work, layering, and drying to achieve the proper depth and color balance. I absolutely love what Myles did with the colors here. In Rogers’ work, the lightning is a supporting element. But here, Myles turned it into a third actor, seemingly causing Batman to lose the element of surprise in a blinding flash. And if you’re going full-frontal on the Jokerfish, you have to get it just right. Lean too far one way, and it’s goofy. Too far the other, and you get a fish that looks ill. Myles nailed the Jokerfish and made this his own. Yet, Myles and Rogers are similar in that both were able to tell a story in a single painstakingly crafted image that will keep my interest for years to come. But this time, I own the OA.
