DescriptionI was fortunate to meet Scott (Kollins) at a comic convention in Memphis. In addition to being a GREAT artist, he was friendly and shared some great stories and insights. And being a DC inker (for me being on Flash, but also Legion of Super-Heroes, Wonder Woman, Batman/Superman), he was on my radar to explore getting a Wrightson commission. I was just thrilled he was willing to do it.So the following year (2025), we planned to meet at the Memphis con again and he would bring the commission. As you have seen from the art, the guy CRUSHED IT! He really made it "his own" by making the characters even more ghostly than any of the others. Truly unique while following the Wrightson prelim. Scott was so kind to answer a few questions I had. (ME) I love that you made the characters even more ghostly. What made you think to do that? (SK) It was really all about doing justice as best i could to a wrightson piece. Berni is a legend and i felt honestly honored-bound to finish the art as if i would show it to him. (ME) Are there any inkers (past or present) that you admire? Or maybe inspired you to take up this line of work? (SK) Tons of inkers i admire. My childhood favs being Austin, Janson, Layton, Sinnott and Royer. I also admire the artists that ink themselves beyond what anyone else can add - Barry Smith, George Perez, Mike Mignola, Michael Golden. (ME) Are there any pencillers that you really enjoy working with and inking? (SK) I haven't inked over many artists. I have inked a bunch over the years on my studio pal, Jeff Johnson. We have fun with various collaborations. (ME) When I think of your work, I think of The Flash. It was such a unique style that fit Flash stories so well. Was that your typical style at the time or did you come up with it just for that comic? And by the way, I just LOVE when inkers take a heavier bold line to outline the figure as you did. (SK) My Flash open line style (no shadows) came together in my sketch books just before Flash while i was drawing Legion monthly. Also others were trying similar at the time and computer coloring was becoming stronger - which all coalesced into me trying that style. DC didn’t know i was doing it until i handed it 1st batch of pages. Thankfully it went over really well in the office. (ME) Was there anything in particular you found difficult in doing this commission? (SK) The only difficulty inking the Wrightson cover was either being too nervous or wondering if my changes would add or subtract from the end result. Social/Sharing |
