Description

Milestone time! This is the 200th piece I’ve posted to CAF, and I wanted it to be a special one. This spectacular piece here was my favourite pickup of 2024, but I didn’t have a high-quality scan to share until just recently.

I still look at this one with stars in my eyes. It’s in no way comparable, but when I was finally able to see it in person for the first time, I was reminded of our fellow collector “RS 88” who owns the cover to issue #1 of the original Lobo miniseries, who proudly proclaimed he carries the piece around his house like it’s the Stanley Cup. All credit to him for the metaphor, but that’s how I feel about this one. I’d take it with me everywhere, if I could.

This page is from the first issue of the 1993 Trinity crossover series, which brought together DC’s three groups of “space cops” – L.E.G.I.O.N., the Darkstars, and the Green Lanterns – and spilled over into their respective mainline titles. In addition to pitting them against each other (sort of like a turf war of jurisdictions), the series pitted the three groups against the Triarch, a trinity of godlike beings intent on terraforming the planet Maltus – never mind that it’s the most populated planet in the galaxy. Here we see L.E.G.I.O.N. Commander Vril Dox organizing a counterattack against one of the Triarch, who appeared on Maltus out of nowhere and began destroying everything in his path. At the end of the page we see the L.E.G.I.O.N.naires reacting to the sudden appearance of the remaining two Triarch members.

It goes with saying that I just adore this page. I love it so much that it’s the only published page in my collection that I purchased before actually reading the comic it came from. During all my readthroughs of L.E.G.I.O.N., I had always skipped over reading Trinity issues 1 and 2, which I would absolutely not have done if I’d known Barry Kitson had been covering a bunch of the art in them. This page came up for sale on CAF, I bought it, and then immediately went to go read the issue. The crossover series is pretty good, as it turns out!

I think Barry Kitson nearly outdid himself with the art he produced for this crossover. It’s some of the most beautiful comic art I’ve ever seen. He reeeeeeeally leaned into his proclivity for hatching and cross hatching, and he went all out with the detail everywhere that he could. In fact, I’d say this page here has more art on it – in terms of line quantity and volume – than any other page in my collection, and it’s a real testament to Barry’s talent that nothing blends into anything else. The foreground characters don’t get lost in the background at all, even in the entirely black and white art, with every panel filled to its edges. The inker, John Stokes, deserves a big share of credit too, for keeping up with Barry’s insane details, and surely even enhancing them in a lot of places. I wish they’d worked together on more comics, because I think their artstyles really complement each other.

Where to even start with the best parts of this page? Just look at the detail in those buildings! Barry’s sci-fi architecture designs are up there with all the greats, and there’s an added unique element here because the city is under attack and a lot of the buildings are damaged or outright destroyed. It’s meant to be raining during this scene, but instead of drawing the rain in every panel, which might have actually been TOO much detail, Barry sets the tone with lightning in panel one and rain in the comparatively simple panel two, and that’s all you really need. In terms of characters, there’s my two favourite L.E.G.I.O.N. members – Vril Dox and his second-in-command, Phase – but there’s also Bertron Diib (the big rocky guy, in case you couldn’t tell!), who’s part of the team’s auxiliary R.E.C.R.U.I.T.S. division. He was always a more minor character, but he gets some good moments to shine during this crossover, before he ultimately gives his life trying to protect civilian bystanders from the Triarch’s attacks. Captain Comet makes an appearance, too, in his newer uniform that he only wore while he was part of L.E.G.I.O.N.’s core team. It’s great to have a page where Vril Dox is really in his element, scheming up a plan to save the planet and protect its people, with dialogue that makes you wonder exactly what it is that’s motivating him (would he care so much about protecting Maltus if the planet hadn’t just hired L.E.G.I.O.N. as their police force? It’s a good thing we don’t have to find out).

I really could go on all day, but I think that just about covers all the best parts of this page. It’s got a place of honour in my collection, for sure, and I’m very happy to finally be able to share it with all of you!
