DescriptionI present you with quite possibly the most epic DAD-tastic page of comic art to come along in a very long time! Possibly ever? There have been countless battles portrayed in comics over the years and Daniel Warren Johnson has drawn his far share of them. Now, in comics, representation does indeed matter. It's important for us all to see ourselves in these stories...well...I feel very seen with this page. In the book, which I have talked about in the other pages from the series in my gallery (go check them out), it is learned that the characters of Sam and Duncan (parents to 6 yr old Penny) can draw power from Penny's nightmares. Well, Duncan stumbles upon this car seat and is immediately drawn to it as a powerful weapon of protection. We are then greeted to this glorious splash page flashback recounting the terrifying (to Penny) moment where Duncan lost his mind while fighting the bane of all parents existence at some point in their parenting journey...the freaking car seat. Now, when I saw this page for the first time...I cannot properly tell you the amount of joy it brought me. In a series filled with moments that shine a light on the realities of parenting (even while largely told in a fantastical dream world), this is a true standout. I 100% felt an immediate kinship with DWJ in a way that no prior page of his art has yet done. This series has come along at the right time for me as a parent, and over time, I truly believe this is a book that more and more people will get turned onto and will be discussed right up there as one of his most personal projects to date. Go read it, as a parent, its better than I can truly convey here. I don't even need to discuss the artistry of this page...I fell it's pretty self evident. So yeah, DWJ splash page? Check. Never thought that would happen. Social/Sharing |
