Description

This is the original cover art for Showcase No. 56 (D.C. Comics, May-June, 1965), which was the second of two try-out issues for the Dr. Fate - Hourman team-up. Although many would probably disagree with me, I consider this second cover much more interesting, artistically, than the cover of Showcase No. 55, in which the figure of Dr. Fate is too stiff (since he is paralyzed that way) and the image of Hourman is a half-back shot. The villain in this issue, Psycho Pirate (who originally appeared in Adventure Comics No. 67, as an enemy of Starman), may not be as popular as Solomon Grundy from issue 55, but he has probably seen more use in post-Golden Age comics than has Grundy himself. This is also one of those comics where the black and white original is, in my opinion, much more striking than the colored comic book cover.
