DescriptionI acquired this lovely piece of artwork in a cash/trade deal with Tom Horvitz in September 2006.The back of the artwork has an inscribed description which has been partially removed. The full inscription written by Robert R. Barrett originally read, "Frank Frazetta in the Fall of 1972 when living in the Sheepshead Bay area of Brooklyn, New York. Frazetta, having always believed that Hal Foster did the best Tarzan, executed the pen & ink drawing as a tribute to Foster's Tarzan.” In October of 2005, I had a letter from my friend, the pre-eminent Burroughs fan, Burroughs original art collector and researcher, Robert R. Barrett. He said, in part, "I see another Frazetta Tarzan sketch on eBay that I used to own and, which with two others, I traded several years ago for Boris' cover painting to TARZAN AND THE LOST EMPIRE..." Bob was referring to this very sketch which Tom was offering up on eBay at that time. I finally managed to put together enough trade and cash to bring this lovely 9 1/2" height x 8 3/4" width drawing my way from Tom. Perhaps the only time this Frazetta was printed same size as the original art was on the front cover of ERBapa (Edgar Rice Burroughs Amateur Press Association) #94, Summer 2007, which is reproduced as an additional image here. The front cover, inside front cover, back cover and inside back cover are all by Frazetta, along with a two other full page reproductions of ERB's characters and one full page TIGA also by Frazetta. Gorgeous drawing! The lines are amazing. Looks as though Frazetta went straight in with a pen and somehow pulled this off without any pencil to guide him, as he often did (is that right, or are the pencil lines just lost in the scan?). Thanks for posting the large scan!
