DescriptionI try not to throw the term Grail around too casually but this one if definitely up there for me.I first saw this image in 1993, and it’s probably my all time favourite depiction of the Death character. Along with the poster I even own the DC mug with this image. I’ve been seeking for the original almost as long as I have been collecting, and I finally tracked it down about 5 years ago, at the end of a $500 taxi ride to a neighbouring state. Jim, the owner had no interest in selling it and I was just happy to have found it and seen it in person. Quest over I thought. However, times change and early this year, he got in touch about something else, but I managed to persuade him to part with her. And flew to Ohio in case he changed his mind and the deal was done over a very civilised meal in a gallery space with wine. On my route back to London I visited Chris Bachalo who was pretty stoked to see the painting again after 30 years. And pronounced it a lot better in person that even he remembered! Sadly Jim passed away very suddenly a couple of months ago. Godspeed Jim and I’m glad to have got the chance to know you and she’ll always have pride of place. Social/Sharing |

A quite wonderful tale, sad ending unfortunately... As beautiful as this art is, his friendship was pretty damn terrific and ranks up there too and HUGE thank you for sharing that story. Was great to hear and glad you got to see your friend and share time as well.

Wow! I've seen this painting of Death reproduced many times and always wondered who owned it and where it was. But you found it and brought it home, congratulations. It really is one of Chris Bachalo's best images of Death. The pose, the clothes, the attitude are all quite singular. Chris really created an image of Death that is unforgettable. I'm delighted that it's in the hands of someone who truly appreciates it.

An amazing backstory...which is appropriate for an even more amazing piece. This is as good as it gets for Sandman folks!
