Description
Original artwork for a children's crossword published in the UK in the 1960s. It is ink on thick board measuring approx 7.5 x 5.5 inches. The crossword in the centre is a paste-on. All of the images around the edge are hand-drawn.

In this piece the image at the top left is missing. It seems that the puzzle maker would reuse some images in different puzzles but lacked the physical resources to simply copy an image and would instead physically carve the image out and stick it onto another piece. I have a few other examples of crossword art by the same artist where many of the images are hacked out in this way. The pencilled in answers tell us that the missing image must be a map of Africa.

As well as featuring in various publications in the 1960s, this crossword also appeared in the book 'Peter Pippin's First Book of Puzzles' published by Target Books in 1972. I have provisionally given the artist as T. McQueen, although he may only have been the editor of this book
