Austin Briggs - Flash Gordon 12-21-1947

This is a really spectacular Flash Gordon Sunday from 1947. It has Flash, Dale, some villains, and a great explosion. Briggs was a well known illustrator in his own right and drew Flash for years after serving as an assistant for Raymond then taking it over himself when Raymond left to serve in World War II.

This particular Sunday has an interesting provenance. Apparently, King Features gave it to Albert Dorn in 1950 to be used as advertising for the Famous Artists School, which Briggs had become a part of. I got the original from Illustration House; it appears that it was in a fire at some point as it is scorched along all four sides... the image area is still nice though.

Plus... from the letter to Dorn from King Features, Briggs nickname was "Bud". How you get Bud from Austin is odd... but apparently true,
