DescriptionI saw this print on eBay some months back, but missed my opportunity to purchase it, even though I was pretty generous with my bid. Afterwards, I did quite a bit of research on this print, which inevitably led me to learn about the original Nina page currently in Rob Pistella's gallery... (Lucky devil)Realizing I'd have to sell my soul in order to purchase this from Rob!!! I went on a quest to locate my own copy of the print and literally spent the last several months checking and rechecking with all the search criteria I could come up with. Every time I searched, I failed to locate the print, but learned more about the piece itself. (All of this next paragraph is corrected below with the update of 4/24/2013): Part of the story is: After the Nina material was turned down by some foolish publishers in the 50's, years later Ellie chose to cut the page up and sell off the pieces, this being a fairly large panel located at the top. Somehow, over a period of time Rob managed to gather all the original pieces and put this back together. If you haven't seen Rob's page about this, you should go looking... I think he had even more information there, or perhaps I learned what I did elsewhere, but all in all, a great story behind the piece. I'm glad now I didn't get the piece I first saw on eBay, because this print is in much better shape. There are a couple fine staple holes (where you can tell they were placed in and removed carefully), so I fixed them with with document mending tape. Plus, I made sure all the material touching the print is acid-free. Other than this, a light bend outside the artwork, and maybe some very minor yellowing, the print is in very nice condition. The frame I found at a Goodwill, and was from some print J.C. Penney's sold in the earlier 70's, so it sort of fit the bill for a print which was released in the 70's... The only part of the story I'd love to have completed is: Where did the print come from? There is a copyright 1972 in the bottom L/H corner, and I read something about it being in some fanzine, or magazine? But, I question this because it's 22" wide and 10" tall, and has never been creased... So, it would have to of been a really LARGE publication! If you know something, please feel free to share and help me finish at least the tale of the mystery behind the prints origin... Enquiring minds want to know! Update 04/24/2013: I received this email from Robert, where he corrects the inaccuracies of the accounts I'd previously held... Thank you!: Hi Joseph: I read your account of the "Beauty and the Beast" print. This was a separate piece of art and was never part of the proposed Sunday page that Rob Pistella owns. I saw the original art in 1967. It was, however, supposed to be the logo art at the top of each Sunday page. Frazetta never showed the proposed NINA art to a syndicate and was never turned down by a publisher. The first time the art was published was FRAZETTA #2 (also known as THE BURROUGHS BULLETIN #29), Summer 1973, as a center spread. It was also used on the contents page of TESTAMENT, Underwood Books, 2001. The above information regarding NINA and the subject art directly from Frank in 1969 when he sent me a photograph of it, along with numerous other photographs for use in FRAZETTA #1 and #2, which I was affiliated with. Ellie Frazetta offered the print in 1972 (hence the 1972 copyright date) for $5.00. Robert R. Barrett. Social/Sharing |

Nice story! I believe Ellie had the prints made and sold signed ones personally and later through her museum.

Wish I could have seen the museum and will always envy your being able to know Frank and Ellie personally... What a story in itself! Now I'll be on the lookout for a signed copy! Best wishes, -Vaughn
