DescriptionThe 80's Crusaders had started out with such promise (if not the greatest execution). It seemed to lose its way about half way through (along with the rest of the 80's Archie line). And then it just crapped out at the end (I find myself questioning if they were even trying - but I know that's mean). Such a sad end. I mean, they didn't even get a "last issue spectacular"!There came a point when I realized I was gonna have to put the commissions on hold for a while and as I was thinking about what I wanted the last one to be the idea of the "last issue spectacular!" popped into my head and I knew what I wanted. Mitch is pretty much my first choice for everything at this point :) Just a good, nice guy - and on top of that a very, very good artist. I believe "Ballard" is Latin for "bringer of the awesomeness". I asked him if he'd do a set of covers to give the Crusaders a proper send off. Lettering by the Irascible Chris Ivy (okay, so I'm no Stan Lee). This would be the fourth and final cover of the "Last Issue Spectacular" storyline. Based around the classic John Byrne cover for Avengers #187. A gracious thanks to Mitch and Chris for helping bring a super group to a proper, super end. Each and every step of the way both guys took my stupid little ideas and made them look legit. Highest, highest, highest recommendations for Mitch and Chris if you're thinking about anything commission related. 2 true class acts. And then there was color! Jovial Javi Solanes has been kind enough to grace this cover with his wonderful colors. As a sucker for some classic flats Javi's old school style on this one made me very happy. Excellent colors all around and he even gets the Brain Emperor's outfit cose to not be completely silly. Take's Mitch Ballard and Javi Solanes to do that! Only one outside of these guy to ever accomplish that was Rich Bukler himself. Original size 11x17 ------------------------- In This Issue ... This is it. The final issue of the 1980's Mighty Crusaders relaunch. The team has been battered and bruised in their recent battles with the Eliminators and Phantasmon but know they learn the truth. It was the Brain Emperor himself who was orchestrating things all along! They Crusaders first foe has returned and he will have vengeance! The entire team - the Comet, Darkling, Fly-Girl, Jaguar, She-Fox, the Golden Age and Modern Shield's as well as Steel Sterling are the only things standing between the Emperor and his total domination of the world! Also, what is the secret last page reveal and what does it say about the future of the Crusaders?!?! This Issue's Cover ... The entire team is held in the thrall of the Brain Emperor. You have the Golden Age Shield, Fly-Girl and Jaguar on the left. Brain Emperor in the middle. And on the right are Steel Sterling, She-Fox and the Modern Shield. Social/Sharing |

How cool is it that you've got She-Fox and the Private Strong Shield in there as well. Didn't they kill him off before the run ended? Not that that means anything in comics.:-) LOVE this!

I don't recall She-Fox dying but bringing back Lancelot Strong would've been page 1 panel 1 of this story. Way too cool to kill (but that series was the weirdest of the 80's Archie's).

That's really cool. Is it based on anything, or just Ballard design goodness?

Still, this Brain Emperor guy looks pretty cool by Mitch. The Brain Emperor is one of those characters that I'm not sure anyone could really make him look good. The new Crusaders series goes, I think, to far draping him in black leather but you oughta see what this version looks like in color.
