Description
On Page 6, panel one, the doorman of the Male Chauvinist Pig Club refuses entrance to the avatar, saying that “the club’s off-limits to women”. That shaft of the avatar’s axe resembles a golf club is no coincidence given that women today continue to be subject to men-only bans (see the Open 2013, Muirfield). 2000ad, and Dredd in particular, has always been known for its dark humour and panel two treats us to a line straight out of a “Carry On” film: “Be careful where you point that chopper, lady!” That the instrument of death is described using slang for the male genitalia is effectively a lecture by Grant that sexism is something that men themselves need to address. Panel 3 shows the interior of the Male Chauvinist Pig Club – it’s filled with fat middle-age men drinking bitter and playing darts. It’s clearly a reenactment club and dialogue like “The day they’re declared equal is the day that I move to Brit-Cit” and “Me look after the kids? I dumped ‘em on her mother” makes no sense in the confines of the Dreddverse. The club is a recreation of a 1970s pub: the patrons dress accordingly and role-play as what they thought patrons from that era were like. They are not plotting to subjugate women: their words are phatic; catchphrases delivered as if by parrots; a harmless and pointless recreation of history from 200 years ago, a continent away.
