DescriptionDoug Moench and Paul Gulacy approached comicbook perfection with the two part "Cat" story in Master of Kung Fu #'s 38 and 39. While lacking portraiture of Shang Chi himself, this penultimate page from the classic "Fight Without Pity" story completely knocks me out, nonetheless. To me, it's an amazing example of Gulacy's brilliant staging and cinematography, and concludes the action epic with genuine drama and poignancy.I don't know if Moench or Gulacy were a priori inspired to work on a kung fu/spy comic, but what they came up with... given marching orders that were likely based completely on commercial let's-cash-in-on-a-current-trend concerns over aesthetic concerns by management... was just amazingly cool, and a high point in 1970's comics. Major thanks to Diana for the page! Social/Sharing |

This issue is the high point of Master of Kung Fu as far as I'm concerned. And I guess much of that is down to that thing called nostalgia. Haven't read the issue in years but I remember this page well.
