Description

This is one of my favorites of all the Walt Kelly pieces I have obtained so far. This piece was a "must have" for me as I love the Prehysterical storyline and it contains everything I could ask for in a strip from this series. The strip is drawn on slightly larger board than most other Pogo dailies and it only has two panels so the artwork really shines. Look at the incredible inking on the horse in the 2nd panel!

It has a great political gag as the Lyndon B. Johnson character (The Loan Arranger) explains to Pogo and Sha Lan that he and Gwhan Shi Foah (the Happy Budda) are going to have a fight to see who is the most "friendly"!

The strip is wrapped up in an amazing second panel featuring the introduction of the George Wallace character, in Nazi garb, with the gag of him offering the Nazi salute and "Hi, L" (Heil) greeting. There are so many levels to this strip, it is beyond words!

Walt Kelly must have felt highly of it as well as he borrowed much of the content for the cover of the Prehysterical Pogo paperback (see image below).

Originally published in newspapers on January 30, 1967; a revised version, with some of the same dialogue, was published on page 127 of the paperback and starts Chapter 22 which is titled "Mirage, Mirage on the Wall, Who is the Friendliest of them All?"
