Description

For the final stop of his Boxers & Saints graphic novel signing tour, Gene Yang came to Dan Vado's Art Boutiki in San Jose on Sept. 27, 2013. Original art was displayed on the walls. Gene signed books and chatted with customers. At one point, Gene took the stage in the back of the store and spoke on the origins of the project. He grew up attending a Chinese Catholic Church in San Jose and the congregation was greatly excited when the Pope started the process to make several Chinese martyrs into saints some ten years ago. Gene started researching these martyrs and the Boxer Rebellion in weekly visits to the library at Cal State East Bay. He also made a research trip to a French archive. I've met Gene before and bought a page from his American Born Chinese book. Felix owns some of the great Monkey King pages from the book so I asked Gene for a sketch. Disclaimer: Gene remembers me from meeting at the Fremont Main Library where I work, but I'm actually a Library Driver Clerk, not a Reference Librarian. My friends who worked and studied to get a MLS degree might not appreciate the inscription.
