Description

There's a bit of a mystery about this page. In 1975, Bob Brown illustrated a fill-in (inventory) story based on Bill Mantlo's plot, to be used should regular X-Men creative team Chris Claremont and Dave Cockrum fall behind schedule on what was then a bi-monthly book. This story takes place between X-Men #95 (the death of Thunderbird) and #97, when Jean Grey returns. Bill Mantlo was also credited with a plot assist on X-Men #96.

At some point between mid-1975 and February 1977, Dave Cockrum inked the splash, but not the rest of the story, which was eventually inked by Tom Sutton. Cockrum fell behind schedule on his final (first run) X-Men issue, to provide his increasingly beautiful inks to Gil Kane's pencils on John Carter, Warlord of Mars #1. So, this story then saw print in May 1977, albeit without the Brown/Cockrum splash seen here. For this deadline doom fill-in tale, Claremont provided a somewhat clumsily conceived two-page framing device, which was beautifully rendered by Cockrum (who could do no wrong at this stage of his career), and also inked by Tom Sutton.

So, some questions remain:

When did Dave Cockrum ink this splash, and why not the whole book if it was sitting in inventory? Is there a Cockrum-inked page two that has not surfaced? Sutton's inks (over Brown) begin on page 3 of the story as published, but what saw publication as page 3 of X-Men #106 was actually page 4 of the inventory story (see additional images for Bob Brown's un-inked and unused page 3).

Since Sutton inked Cockrum's framing pages, I'll assume that he also inked the remaining Bob Brown pages in January or February 1977 (right after Bob Brown passed away), and not at some earlier date. And...

Who really cares?

Actually, I will write that I care. I was not aware that this page existed, but it does not surprise me based on your excellent description. Since I am the owner of the published page 2 from this issue, I do now care to know if Bob Brown ever did pencil a page 2. Back in 2012 when most of the Brown art came to the market, it started with the published page 3. I think that Dave did an excellent job of inking here, and it represents well what he could do in this aspect of the creative process. This is a neat splash, but an even neater description. Thanks much for the image post.

Never seen this before, really cool! Those inks are incredible, definitely Cockrum at his peak. Interesting that in the eulogy Claremont wrote that Bob Brown could have taken over for Cockrum on X-men. If that had happened, I wonder  how successful the X-men would have become?
