DescriptionUsing the Marvel Method... where the artists created the stories from rough outlines from Stan Lee, who then provided dialogue... Gene Colan stretches the classic Mole Man origin sequence over two pages. Compare this re-telling to Jack Kirby's one page version in Fantastic Four #1. I'm not complaining, this is still great comics! Gene the Dean had a habit of exploring cinematic pacing of his scenes throughout a story, then cramming the dénouement into a few rushed panels on the last page. Cap #136 is another perfect example of this!"Not much story... but Stan Lee raves on the Bullpen page about the art on this book. Following Tom Palmer last month, this issue sees Bill Everett teaming up with Gene Colan again, and while earlier such teamings were impressive, this time it's ASTONISHING! I'm not kidding, the art on this issue is MIND-BOGGLING. Everett has always been known for very fine, very sharp rendering detail, but this is going way over-the-top. It reminds me in spots of the kind of engraving you see on US Currency. I'M NOT KIDDING! How the HELL could they ever reproduce stuff like this in reprints? I'm sure glad I have the original comic." ~ Henry R. Kujawa, 70's Marvel Re-Reading Project "You know, you're right. I'd forgotten all about it until I went to check my old copy. Everett uses a feathery embellishing touch that is exhausting just LOOKING at it! It reminds me of Alcala's inks over John Buscema on those Savage Sword of Conans." ~ KOBE27, ibid Social/Sharing |

Given the limitations of the printing process back then, it really says something about artists like Everett who put so much effort into their inks. Beautiful page!

I've been a huge Everett fan since I bought Tales to Astonish # 79 off the rack. The classic Hercules vs Hulk! His Subby blew my mind as a boy! He made me want to be a comic book artist! His inking on every artist he inked was mind blowing. Especially, on the late great Gene Colan! Look at Everett's inks on Kirby's last issues of Thor. The cover to Marvel Feature #3 over Gil Kane beautiful cover. With the defeated Defenders & Xemmu! All so detailed & you can't stop looking at it. It's like looking at a stunning woman on a certain level! Congrads!
