When J Allen St. John was offered his first Edgar Rice Burroughs commissions for the Mars books, he made a tour of part of the middle east to gather imagery of desert landscapes and alien architecture. This is the most important of the paintings from that trip.

This painting originally came from Jim Romano, who lived in St John�s studio and obtained a good deal of his art. As I understand it, the painting hung near St. John's easel his entire career.
