Description

Page 1 of the Marvel Shadow opus. Michael fills this page with fantastic period detail. We meet our damsel in distress. Beautiful representation of Times Square. I see a new element each time that I look it over. Another Kaluta masterwork.

I always thought this was a strange pairing of inker and artist that worked out better than I would have imagined. I like this comic and the art was great.

Thanks Jeff. I agree that it is an unusual pairing, but it works beautifully. I've read interviews where Michael stated that he spent a lot of time illustrating the correct period details on guns, machinery, cars, planes, architecture, signs, and clothing, because he was afraid that Wrightson, fantastic artist and inker that he is, might be unfamiliar with those things. He said that Heath was much more familiar with those items, and would not have needed the detailed guidance. I'm glad that Michael chose to fully render them anyway. While I would have loved to see the Kaluta/Wrightson epic, Heath did a great job!

Bob, I agree totally. The cars, signs, trolleys, and people are beautifully done. I would swear that the two pedestrians to the right, are actors Robert Cummings and Barbara Stanwyck.

David, Thanks for your comment. I love Michael's work, especially on The Shadow. This book came out of nowhere when Marvel announced it back in the 80's. I can remember picking it up at my local comic shop. Once home. I eagerly went through the book. Even now, I marvel at the artwork. This page has so much beautiful period detail throughout. I would have loved to see what Wrightson would have done with the inks, but Heath, an amazing artist on his own, did a fantastic job in relief. I'm glad you enjoyed the page.
