DescriptionIn late March of 2012, Armando Huerta posted on his deviantart page that he was running a special on commissions. Two for the price of one. As a big fan of his work, I decided to take him up on the offer. The initial email said ‘two to four weeks to deliver.’Months went by and I asked how they were going and the response was always something short but polite to the effect of ‘its being worked on’ and then the notes came less frequently. Even explanations how he was bust prepping for some comic shows. And I fully understand how busy things can get. However, it has now been two years and the last communication I got from him was well over a year ago. Now, I am a pretty forgiving and understanding guy and I would like to think that all the emails I have sent in that time have gotten lost or that somehow he has missed them as I would not like to think he has just ignored me or not wanted to complete them without offering a refund. Even emails asking for more time would have been OK. But there has simply been nothing in the way of communication or explanation so I suspect the pieces will never happen at this point. This is posted here in hopes other collectors have some advice to offer or as a warning to think very carefully about who you decide to do that next great piece. Social/Sharing |

I went through something similar with Armando in 2013. Once it became clear that he wasn't able to meet a prior agreed upon deadline, I received a full refund without much fuss. I'll give him credit for that. When it comes to commissions in general, imo, buyers must go in with the attitude that it may not work out. Given the excruciating stories we've all heard over the years, it's become vital to clearly outline deadline and refund terms from day one. Also, buyers must be prepared to walk away from the commission. There's lots of other artwork to buy out there. Once buyers get caught up in the artist's drama, true or not, it could take years to get sorted out. That's a lot of stress and anxiety for a pin up of Batgirl. The moment your instincts start telling you something is up, it's time to take your cash elsewhere. Being able to walk away is an essential trait of any hobby, otherwise it risks becoming an unhealthy obsession. JMO.
