Finally...after 18 long years, I bought back one of my all time favorite pieces of original comic book artwork. Originally, way back in 1996, I sold this Batman title page to help out a good friend who, at the time, was in dire need of financial help. I never regretted selling it for that reason, but I would be lying if I said it didn't hurt. This splash...along with my panel page from the same book has always held significant notaligic value for me. I can still remember the very first time I ever read this story, which was in the Fall of 1966 while visiting my childhood best friend at his home. We both really liked comic books and he happened to have have a copy of Batman #185 fresh off the stands. It was an 80 page Giant...which I always loved...and this special issue featured a tribute of Batmsn's crime fighting partner, Robin. I can still remember it like it was yesterday...on the front cover, a thumbnail picture of a teary eyed Batman carrying a dead Robin immediately caught my eye. This particular reprint was a 1963 Bill Finger story entitled "Robin dies At Dawn". Being only a boy of only 9 years old, I wondered...how in the world are they going to explain this one away? Obviously, Robin was not dead, but they sure knew how to hook you with an enticing cover. Of course, many of today's Batman fans believe this period had some of the more cheesy storylines...such as Batman and Robin fighting alien lifeforms from outer space and whatnot. And there may be some truth to that, but for a nine year old boy, these weird, off the wall, stories were rather exciting. About 25 years later, it just so happened, I became good friends with both Shelly Moldoff and Charles Paris, the penciller and inker of this classic Batman story. To this day, I hold these two artists in the highest of regard for they gave me many happy childhood memories...of Batman and his outlandish adventures, no matter how wierd they may have been...and here today, I find that I still enjoy those stories as much as I ever did.

Congratulations on getting this amazing page back---love the layout and the inks here! This era of Batman is extremely underrated, and despite some of the far-out ideas it did lay a good foundation for the character at the time. Love it!

For whatever reason, certain periods in comics are swept under the rug. With DC finally embracing Batman '66, there's still hope for this part of Batman's history. Hey, it doesn't have to be "intense" to be entertaining.
