I used to own the last two pages from Detective #455...but ended up selling them to finance another purchase. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I think Bernie Wrightson may have done the layouts for this story. Anyway, I think this story is one of Grell’s greatest works. Congrats on the Detective #287 cover recreation!
Thanks Mike! This was in a 2014 Heritage Auction...I think in May.
Thanks Nick! Yeah...I know what you mean about the thrashers on FaceBook. Even though everyone is entitled to their own opinion, I think they may be a little too hard on certain inkers. Contrary to popular belief, I really like inkers such as Roussos and Abel over Swan's pencils. They may not be Murphy Anderson, but they are still very good at their craft...and I have great respect for their work. Besides that...it's absolutely nostalgic!
Hi Timothy...I bought this on e-Bay about 9 or 10 years ago.
Beautiful example, Mark! By far, this has to be the best Marshall Rogers piece in your collection. I used to own the cover to this particular book and have always regretted letting it go. Whatever you do...don't ever let this one get away! Congrats on a great find!
I also want to thank you, too, Mike. If it hadn't been for you, I would have never even known about this awesome page.
I can remember holding this page in my hands at a San Diego Con back in the '80s...staring at it for a long time, debating whether to buy it or not. At the time, it had a price of $65 on it...which is of course, a bargain by today's standards. But it is a truly beautiful Don Newton splash and looking back, I now wish I had bought it when I had the opportunity. Having said that, if you ever decide to sell tihs page, I would greatly appreciate it if you would let me know.
Wally, these Murphy Anderson "Buck Rogers" dailies are great! If you ever decide to let go of one of them, please keep me in mind.
No, I have never seen it as of yet...but hopefully, it still does exists.
I like the way you had this cover reinterpreted. I used to own the cover to Action Comics #366 a long time ago.
I didn't even know that this particular page even existed. Really nice, Geroge!
I can still remember giving him some reference material for the rocketship.
Should you ever decide to part with this Sprang painting, please let me know. I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks!
I have always loved this page since I first read the Batman #180 comic book when I was 9 years old. Should you ever decide to part with this art, please keep me in mind. I am a serious collector and will definitely make it worth your while. Thanks!
