Tratto da un romanzo di Alessandro Dumas, il film narra di Buridan che, accusato di aver ucciso il padre della regina Margherita, indaga a Parigi sul vero assassino che si rivela essere Saint Lorraine, ministro della sovrana. Il protagonista è catturato ma subito liberato da Margherita che scopre in lui il suo ex amante Lionel. La regina, fuggito Buridan, ucciso il ministro, dà fuoco al castello e, ormai completamente pazza, muore nell'incendio.
