Description

People that know me know I am a Wrightson fan. Have been for many decades. And it is always good to see Bernie at shows. After walking around and looking at the prices Anthony Snyder had on things, and what a lot of younger, less seasoned, artists had on their work, I kept coming back to Bernie's portfolio and this page from Uncle Bill's Barrel. I considered it a deal!

Uncle Bill's Barrel was Bernie Wrightson's second published comic book story. It has appeared several places; first in the fanzine Graphic Showcase #2 (Summer 1969), then in the book Badtime Stories. To me this shows a young Wrightson channelling the influence of Graham Ingels and Frank Frazetta. It has corpses, and girls, and details galore. Classic stuff.

Bernie's wife told me that this story was what lead to Carmine Infantino hiring Bernie at DC. Apparently Infantino saw a set of stats of this story and was so impressed that he offered Bernie his first job at DC Comics. I'd hire him. He's pretty darn good if you ask me... shows lots of potential.

The Uncle Bill's pages are so wonderful! I've been wanting one of these since Berni first posted them. You've selected a great one... that center panel is one of my favorites of the story. Congrats and great choice Wallace!!!

Really nice. Ingels is always the first apparent influence when I look at Wrightson's Swamp Thing work, but it's interesting to see such a strong Frazetta influence here. (Of course Berni makes it his own).
