If I was teaching someone how to collect nice art on a limited budget, this piece would make a great example. Nothing tickles my fancy more than bargain priced art that looks better than pieces that are ten times the price (because in most cases, the price has more to do with the signature rather than the drawing). In this case, it’s a simple yet majestic pencil drawing of the one and only Man of Steel, by the one and only Sandy Plunkett. The really fascinating thing about Sandy (besides his incredible skill and artistry) is how he can be so vastly under rated while being on the elite list of illustrators who are considered to be an artist’s artist. It’s an impressive list. Jose Luis Garcia-Lopez, P Craig Russell, and Kevin Nowlan just to name a few. Not necessarily fan favorites or the current “hot” artists, but these are the kinds of artists that other artists look up to, admire, even collect. And Sandy’s name has been on this list for most of his career. The fact that you can buy a hundred nice Plunkett pieces for the price of a mediocre McFarlane cover tells you how unfairly skewed the market is. But like I said at the top, this isn’t a class on collecting. It’s more like Art Appreciation. And when it comes to gorgeous artwork that doesn’t drain my bank account, there are few artists I appreciate more than Sandy Plunkett.

My thanks to Albert Moy for this gem. I guess Albert is mellowing with age. Most of the time, I feel like I’m having a stroke when I see those prices. But in recent years there have been plenty of bargains to be found at his booth. Here’s hoping that I can continue to find great pieces with fewer zero‘s rather than more zero‘s from Albert. LOL!

One of the most truthful things you have written in this comic art collecting blog masquerading as an art collection showcase is "because in most cases, the price has more to do with the signature rather than the drawing," and it is especially true here. I remember seeing Plunkett's art when collecting comics and wondering why I hadn't seen him on more books. I still don't know the answer to that question, but as far as "the drawing" goes, regardless of how much you paid, you will be hard pressed to find better. Congratulations on, after all these years, still not buying the hype and collecting great art, it's truly "super."
