Love the feel to this! It looks as though some of the wispy elements in the upper sky are reflections off of built-up paint rather than actual pigment.

Yes, the upper wispy shapes (spermatozoa?) are "sculpted" thick paint. They are black on black, so the forms are made clear by the specular highlights from the light hitting them. Cool stuff.
