Description

This is an original drawing by Milton Caniff of his character Steve Canyon. According to the Bauman family, Dottie Bauman requested this drawing from the artist for her husband Richard's birthday in 1958. She asked for a drawing showing Steve in his full-dress uniform, something Caniff had never done before. He researched the service ribbons Canyon would have earned and drew his character in full-dress uniform for the first time. I first found out about this piece from a 1969 article in the Virginian-Pilot about Bauman and his collection. The article included an image of the piece. In amongst the scrapbooks and boxes in Bauman's Steve Canyon comic strip collection were several black and white photos taken by the Virginian-Pilot's photographer. There was also a large photo-negative scan of the artwork. I purchased the original on Nov. 30, 2013, so I had the negative before I had bought the original art! I never thought that I would get the chance to purchase the artwork, so I had a black and white print made from the negative. I've included the negative and scan as extra images.
