Description

A portrait of Richard Bauman by Milton Caniff from his staff at Coast Guard headquarters in D.C. They contacted Caniff to request a portrait. It was a going away gift for Bauman as he was leaving to command the First Coast Guard District in Boston. In a letter published in Caniffites Vol. 1, #14, March 1987, Bauman wrote: "As an admiral in charge of all the U.S. aids to navigation, Mr. Caniff drew my head in uniform as a going away gift from my staff." He ended the letter with: "I am really a 'Steve Canyon' specialist. I am interested in 'Terry' etc. — but not enough to be a collector; however, anything to with Steve Canyon is down my alley!"
