DescriptionEver since I first laid my very young and impressionable eyes on the great cover for Detective Comics #31 (September, 1939) by Bob Kane, I've been fascinated by the mysterious hooded villain cloaked in blood-red and carrying a beautiful blonde damsel to his fog-laden mountain castle at the lower left of the cover, this "...terrifying master of crime known as THE MONK!" Gardner Fox and Kane simply outdid themselves with this fantastic two-part saga that pitted The Bat-Man against one of the most powerful foes he has ever faced - a dark supernatural adversary that really gave Batman a run for his money. To this day, I think this was one of the best Golden-Age tales ever published and it's really a pity that the Monk was never utilized the way he could have been - not making another appearance in a Batman story until the early 1980's.Nonetheless, when Bob stayed with me and my family in the summer of 1978 after the San Diego Comic Con (he was also having a one man showing at the Old Towne Circle Gallery in Old Town, San Diego at this time), I asked him to do a few personal pieces for me and this was one of them. As he was drawing it he smiled and said, "You know, I have not drawn The Monk since 1939." The Monk ranks as my favorite Batman villain of all time. Yes, higher than the Joker, Penguin, Two-Face, Riddler et al. For me, he's more mysterious, more fascinating, more powerful (since he is a vampire and a werewolf) and much COOLER! I doubt if there is another authentic Monk illustration by Kane in existence, but if so, I'd love to see it! Enjoy! Social/Sharing |
