Description

This is page two of a 2-page Fred Boatman story from Peterson Publishing's 'CARtoons.' I don't know what issue, but it's from around 1961 or 1962. I loved this magazine and read it before I started collecting comics. I have a small stack of OA from CARtoons. The two pages by Fred Boatman are gorgeous. I need to rescan the first page, since a lot of pieces of Zipatone have come loose, especially the title pieces. These pages are huge, noticeably larger than 2up comic pages (hence the cobbled together scan here with the bad seam just below the real seam in the page). These Craftint pages are crazy, too. When painted with a special chemical, the hatching would appear. If painted with a stronger solution (I think), it would be cross hatching. Combine that with actual hatching, and Zipatone, and you get insanely complex and subtle tones. But what I most love about this page is the incredible draftsmanship and brushwork.
