Description

This Phil May cartoon appeared in Punch magazine on March 14, 1900. May sadly passed away just three years later, due to cirrhosis of the liver. Besides depicting heavy drinkers in his cartoon, May himself was an alcoholic. The caption for the piece is hard to make out, but is as follows:

Commissionaire: "Would you like a four-wheeler or a 'ansom, Sir!"
Convivial Party (indistinctly: "Ver' mush oblige--but--reely don't think I could take 'ny more!"

The gag revolves around the double meaning of four-wheeler and hansom, which can also refer to mixed-drinks.

This piece, along with the Linley Sambourne piece that I've just added, belonged to my friends Sy and Sandy Schechter. Sy introduced me to the great old British cartoonists, and Phil May was his favorite. I'm honored to add this piece to my collection.
