DescriptionA grail page for me. Alan Moore redefined so many characters, but the way he wrote Adam Strange in a two-part story during his Swamp Thing run really stuck with me. I thought Strange was just another cheesy '50s spaceman with a corny jetpack, a funny helmet and a silly gun who fought space lizards until I read this story, and finally I understood who Adam Strange is: The sci-fi/adventure version of John McClane. He's always out-powered, frequently outnumbered, and generally outgunned. But he always finds away to triumph because he thinks his way through impossible crises and he's not afraid to fight dirty against overwhelming odds. It's a characterization I tried very hard to emulate when I briefly wrote the character for DC. I even had him go back to his original costume because I thought it only added to his underdog image. But the bottom line is that Alan Moore made me think harder about a character than I ever had before, and it profoundly affected me as a budding writer. On the art side, the large panel struck me when I first saw it as such a beautiful distillation of the joy in Adam's life - the magical world he feels he lives in now, and the love he shares with Alanna... A few years ago, I asked Rick Veitch to recreate it as a commission for me, and now I have the original item! I also love the panel of Adam streaking downward to fight Swamp Thing. The looks on his and Alanna's faces capture the emotion of the moment perfectly, and Alfredo Alcala's inks, as always, provide incredible mood and texture. I've wanted this page since I first read the story almost 30 years ago. I can't believe I own it.Social/Sharing |

Ît is amazing how Moore could change one's perspective on these classic characters without changing what made them special in the first place. This was definitely one of my favorite issues from Veitch's run.
