Description

Once again we introduce a hero from the past that you've probably never heard of: Dagar the Desert Hawk. The Dag Man headlined his own short-lived title back in the late 1940s. He was a desert adventurer-type, probably influenced by Lawrence of Arabia. Interestingly enough, even though he was the star of the comic, the covers always more prominently featured his usually scantily clad love interest Ayesha, while he appeared in the background -- and no, she wasn't a sista. Since the cancelation of his comic, Dagar hasn't been seen anywhere. Not in Project Superpowers, not in any of the public domain projects that have appeared in the past few years, not even in a Roy Johnson commission. Now you KNOW that's obscure!

This piece was penciled by Nick Choles, whose artwork I first came familiar with from an issue he did of DC's short-lived Primal Force comic in the 90s. I think he did a fantastic job here and you can contact him through his website at nickcholes.com

Killer inks by, who else, the great Bob Almond! Give Bob a holler to ink those penciled pieces of yours that are just crying out for some inky lovin'!

I'm not sure what's more obscure here, Dagar or Nick Choles? I don't have the Dagar the Desert Hawk comic, but I am sure going to dig out my Primal Force books tomorrow. Great art and the usual sensational inks from Mr. Almond! Nice one Damon!

Hey, Rob! Thanks for the kind comments. I probably should've mentioned that anyone wanting to read Dagar's comics can find them online at the Digital Comics Museum website.

I love Dagar as much as the next guy but where is Ayesha...cm'on Damon -- she deserves her time in the Sun too!

Ayesha was more prominently featured on every Dagar cover than Dagar was. That's gotta hurt. I'm simply giving him his props here.:-)

I am not familiar with Dagar, but I do remember Nick Choles! Really nice commission and as always, I enjoy reading your descriptions.

Thanks for the kind comments, Travis. I hope to one day find an obscure hero who can go toe-to-toe with Karate Kid:-)

To echo OML Guy -- mo' Ayesha, mo' betta! Although it's tough to argue that Dagar doesn't cut a dashing figure all by his lonesome. Thanks to the legendary Mr. Owens for keeping yet another all-but-forgotten hero in the spotlight!

A very cool piece once again inked perfectly by Almond but it's this Cholesterol guy I'm most impressed with here! Great work! Love seeing old obscure characters get some appreciation.
