Description

This 9" x 12" original painting was used for the cover of Walt Disney's Donald Duck Visits Disneyland, a Whitman Press Out & Play activity box that Walt Disney Productions copyrighted on October 5, 1970.

While Donald Duck splashes down in a Matterhorn bobsled, his nephews, Huey, Dewey, and Louie, show off the paper model kit's inside contents: a 30" x 30" coloring play mat, eight die-cut press-out sheets of Disneyland attractions and characters, and six Whitman crayons.

The illustration provides a uniquely vintage look at the Haunted Mansion's Masked Executioner, one of the 999 ghosts in the spirited graveyard jubilee. With a heavy axe in one hand, and a keyring in the other, his resemblance was clearly influenced by The Story and Song from The Haunted Mansion, the classic 1969 souvenir album book that was illustrated by Disney Imagineer Collin Campbell to commemorate the grand opening of the ride. In that story, the Masked Executioner unlocks the Haunted Mansion's front door on the first page, which explains the welcome mat underneath his feet in the full-size die-cut figure.

Perched atop the Masked Executioner's blade rests a raven, which, at one time, was going to accompany guests through their tour of the Haunted Mansion, conversing with them in the way that the "Ghost Host" narrator now does.
