DescriptionApologies for re-posting a page I had previously posted. I could have just added the new image to the existing listing, but then no one would have known that the restored image was available, and I thought some of you might be interested. What we have here is about 2 total square inches of previously unseen Kirby art, in the form of the bottom 3/16" of the panel, which had been covered up by the indicia. Also removed is the "Stan Lee Presents" banner at the top, one of the many unfortunate design decisions taken by Marvel in the bronze age, IMHO. Both stats were causing browning to the page. Also removed, as a by-product of the cleaning process, was an authentic after-the-fact Kirby signature in marker on the lower left of the image. This was fine with me, actually, as the signature was a blemish on the artwork. I've always regarded signatures as fairly redundant in the case of an unmistakeable artist like JK. I spent a fair amount of money to recover what most people would probably regard as an insignificant strip of a Kirby/Royer drawing, but for me it was worth it. The drawing now breathes as Kirby saw it on the drawing board. Restoration & conservation by Gordon Christman.Social/Sharing |

I can't completely agree about the signature, but the art has regained its original splendor for sure. Just great!

Very cool. This is a great piece with a Kirby monster and an even bigger Kirby monster. You do bring up some interesting things in the restoration. Personally I like the stats but in this case they were covering artwork. It would be hard to decide to leave them off for me. I think knowing the signature was going to be gone would have stopped me from the restoration and I must admit I am impressed by how well it came out. I have had 2 restorations done in the past. One I was happy with and one I wasn't. I have many pieces that need some work and a half dozen I really should get done soon.

Deacidification involves completely soaking the paper. When the art dries, it's about 1/4" bigger! So to restore to publication appearance you'd want to recreate the stats slightly bigger. With respect to signatures right on top of the art, I feel they are part of the history of fandom and an interesting illustration of the artist's own disregard for the page as art object, but on the other hand they are a later addition and not part of the fundamental use-history of the object, and most importantly, they mess up the art! Kirby's signature is every line he put down. Making 100% of those lines visible was paramount for me.

Wonderful splash of one of the more nostalgic comic titles for me. Personally I love having the signature and really love Tile stats. But, they were causing damage, tough call. Were they or could they have been added to an overlay?

Fascinating story Aaron. I could see how difficult a 'line ball' decision you had to make. Whatever, the Kirby power pulsates. Wish we had a restorer here in Oz of the quality of craftsmanship Gordon demonstrates here.
