DescriptionHere’s a John Richard Flanagan illo from later in his career, when he’d moved from the slicks to the pulps. I bought this in 2004 from Illustration House, and it took me a decade to identify it. Although it has a ’45 date by the signature, it’s actually from the November 1940 issue of Blue Book, illustrating “Two Swordsmen of Gascony” by H. Bedford-Jones. I’ve had this problem with identifying Flanagan illos before -- he almost never dated them when he drew them for magazines, but would later date them, presumably with whatever year it was at the time. My guess is that it was done in conjunction with selling them, or for putting them in a gallery show, to make them look up to date. The tale is set in France, and the caption reads: “The name of Moliere, comrades, shall be linked with yours in fame.” His comrades are Cyrano and D’Artaignan.Social/Sharing |
