Description

This was another piece that was so cheap I had to take a shot at it. It's a very early sketch, I am guessing between 1971 and 1973. I have seen sketches that are similar to this one in my travels. I have even seen the signature that reads "por Chaykin" on similar quick sketches from the same period. Scott Edelman has a piece from one of the Phil Seuling shows that he got directly from Howard with the same sig. The paper is definitely old enough. It has the right feel, and there aren't excessive aging bits that seem out-of-the-ordinary or forced. I bought it from a dealer that advertises on this site at the 2015 New York Comic Con.

All of that said, it's so simple and small that, of course, there is a chance that it's a fake or a study by another artist or fan. However, it was so cheap that, if it is a fake or study, that I won't feel too bad. I know... I could send it to Howard on facebook, but I don't want to waste his time (and I don't think he would remember something like this anyway). If he comes back to one of my home turf shows (Boston, RI, CT) I will tuck it into the next portfolio I ask him to go through.

I've been looking for a vintage Chaykin piece that I could afford, and I am hoping that this is the real thing. Feel free to chime in with your opinions.

(UPDATE) At the 2016 Boston Comic Con, I showed this to Howard, and he did verify that it is 100% his artwork.
