Description

An excellent example of Powers horror/macabre work! This is from the cover for the 1960 Ballantine book.

Powers frequently cropped his cover art before offering for sale to improve the composition and make the piece work better as a "painting", such is the case here (note the actual book cover below).

Thanks Glynn, I had to forge many wide rivers and climb many tall mountains before battling a multi-headed creature for this treasure ; )

Boy, vintage Powers! Gotta love it. I've got a nice piece from 1977, but never found anything earlier for sale.

Thanks. Yes, earlier pieces are harder to come by, but Powers produced amazing work all the way until his death in 1996. I am always curious what pieces are out there -- which piece do you own?

It's a cover for a Russian Science Fiction anthology, I think. I'll have to look again. Also, will take a pic and post it soon.

So that's where it went! One of my favorites by him! I bid on this one as well but wasn't aggressive enough. The one that got away. Glad to see it's in a good home.

Thanks, yes, definitely one of his best horror pieces (that he did so well)! Most folks think SF when they think of Powers, but he excelled at the macabre! I failed to see this one when it went to auction many years ago, but it resurfaced from the depths and crept into my collection this week :)
