DescriptionA few days ago, I posted a Planet Stories cover by Frank Kelly Freas. I thought I'd return to the Planet Stories theme tonight, this time posting a cover by one of Fiction House's main cover artists during the 1940's and early 1950's.This one is by Allen Anderson, and graced the cover of the Spring 1950 issue. Of the four Anderson Planet Stories covers I've seen, this is the only one on canvas, while the others were all on board (though nearly all his non-SF pulp work I've seen has been on canvas). It's also the largest I've seen, at about 26" x 18", while the other Planet covers I've seen were all around 20" x 14". Besides his pulp work, Anderson also did comic book covers for the Ziff-Davis chain in the late 1940's and early 1950's. This is one of those which just goes to show that hidden gems may still be out there, waiting to be found. This one wasn't known to still exist until it came out at auction a few years ago, from a small auction house in Western New York (not far from where I grew up). I have no clue who the consignor was, or how it ended up there, and in fact I wasn't aware it was being auctioned at the time. Fortunately for me, a friend of mine won it, and we picked it up from him later. Hopefully there are more Anderson paintings out there waiting to be discovered! Social/Sharing |

Fantastic cover painting with a great story to go with it.

NIce example though the fact he added the logo boxes always drives me crazy. The one yo ugot from me originally came from a bookstore in that area of New York in the 1970s who I guess got several as it would make sense that that at some point was the source also for this one. (The logo box as well as your generous trade offer was what got me to part with mine- though I miss the western Jim Steranko got more!)
