As a huge fan of McWilliams' Flying Aces artwork, I was blown away when I saw this Twin Earths piece come to market. And to top it off, it's from the Al Williamson Collection!!!

McWilliams was the BEST at drawing planes. Great daily.

David, I love your McWilliams gallery. He could really capture the feel of planes in flight. His work puts you in the cockpit with the pilot. Nothing like the feeling generated by those golden age craft. Wind in the wings on a road to high adventure. This Twin Earths piece is beautifully done. The inking in that first panel reminds me of the great Dave Stevens.

This is just wonderful! One of the great things about Twin Earths is that it was supposedly a Science Fiction strip, but if you look around at many examples spanning the early 50's to the mid 60's, you'll find examples that appear to be from completely different genres such as crime, Mystery/Suspense, underwater sea action, and now this air Force War example. Spectacular!

Surely that's a George Evans face in panel 1? Did Evans ghost for McWilliams on this strip? The subject matter also seems to reinforce this suspicion. Whoever did it, this is a beautiful example, and the delineation of the plane is just lovely.

Curious, I hadn't heard that theory before. With Twin Earths being widely considered McWilliams' magnum opus, and with Al's professional career having been launched in the pages of Flying Aces magazine, I never once questioned this having been his hand on this strip. Perhaps others might weigh in, but for now, I'll still consider this a McWilliams masterpiece. Thanks so much for the comment Mark!
