Description
There was a period when Joe Kubert was making major changes to the art in the comics that he was editing. In some cases it was a matter of adapting previously published work for a new use, but in other cases Kubert appeared to be unhappy with his artists' storytelling. John Severin, Russ Heath, Andru & Esposito, and Dan Spiegle were all on the wrong side of Kubert's ink and white paint. The changes made to Spiegle's original art are obvious when the pages are placed on a light table. Panels 1 and 3 are new pieces of art by Kubert drawn on Bristol board glued on to Spiegle's art. Panel 2 has the shadows darkened by Kubert. Panel 4 has Kubert drawing a new face on the officer and simplifying the clothing and vegetation with black ink. Panel 5 has a new Kubert drawn hand and arm glued down to Spiegle's art. A lot of Spiegle's feathering and detail have been covered with Kubert's ink. The sound effect is a patch in panel 6 by Kubert and he has simplified and drawn in new vegetation along with filling in the shadows on the soldiers. The only parts of the large panel by Spiegle are the "BLAAMM" sound effect and the feet and part of the soldier's legs, everything else is Joe Kubert art. Spiegle's original panel had the soldier in a much more twisted pose and included more equipment, such as a rifle.

Fascinating how the archaeology of the page gives us a glimpse into the workings of the comic at the time. This is a great looking DPS.

That's  great description Alan! I admire your analysis! I have pages from that story that I need to post, albeit without such high quality analysis. I'm taking a closer look at them. You have set a very high bar!
