DescriptionAs many are aware, Caniff left Terry and the Pirates in 1946 to create Steve Canyon. He drew that strip from 1947 until he passed away... with the last daily appearing almost two months after his passing.This is a daily from 1 January 1952, featuring his long-time love interest, Summer Olson, and her son Oley. Here she leaves Oley with Canyon to go help the wife of a general. From their reaction, both Steve and Oley should have learned from the experience... but Canyon and Olson were pronounced "man and wife" in the first panel of the April 25, 1970 daily strip... 18 years later. Like a lot of the dailies that are in collector's hands, this one was given to someone (Jack Appleton) by Caniff in 1953. I sometimes wonder why a certain strip was given to a person; perhaps it had some meaning to Caniff or the recipient? Just recently, there was a bit of a controversy on ComicArt-L regarding someone putting their stamp on the back of an original. Here is an example of how comic art was treated in 1953. When I bought this strip it arrived glues to a mat which I have had removed, but you can still some of the black on the strip. As much as we all wish this king of thing wasn't done... it was.
