I've long felt that Brian Michael Bendis's Ultimate Spider-Man has been consistently one of the finest comic series of the 21st century. I've long wanted to add a page from the book to my collection, and I really wanted it to be one by Mark Bagley, who was the main artist when the series began and for must of its run. I already have a Bagley page in my collection (from The Pulse), but I'm such an Ultimate Spidey fan, I wanted one from that book as well.

Now, this is far from the most exciting or action-packed page from the series. Not only does the titular character not appear in costume here, but it's a rather mundane scene featuring Peter Parker, Aunt May and another average guy. I still love the board, though, as Ultimate Spidey was always at its strongest in the everyday, character-driven moments.

While Bagley has been a tremendous Spidey artist throughout his career, conveying the character's agility, lithe quality and weird nature of his powers incredibly well, I think his most important contribution to the series was his depiction of Peter's youth. He always looked like a kid, from the first issue to his eventual death. Spidey always looks small in stature in this book, and that kept it rooted as a coming-of-age story from start to finish. I've always appreciated his reinterpretation of May Parker as well. In this series, Bagley transformed her from a small, fragile, doting woman to a fierce protector as well as a stern, guiding force in Peter's life. Both of those elements are on display in this page (which I picked up for a great price on eBay from Anthony's Comic Art).

Other noteworthy aspects of the page are the faint pencil marks - both blueline and traditional pencils. It makes me wonder if Bagley roughs a page out in blueline pencil first and then goes over it in gray/black. I also appreciate the texture inker Scott Hanna (a frequent Bagley collaborator) brings to the art. I note in particular the small lines (in black and in white) he uses to convey the imperfections of the siding on the house in Panel 4. The board is also signed by Hanna at the bottom right.
