I love Terry and the Pirates. As much fun as the adventure was that he created, what really stands out are his characters. There are so many great ones but other than the main cast, it was always the girls I liked. The Dragonlady is one of my favorite all time characters in all of comicdom. When it comes to Pat Ryan and romance, she was great but more of a distraction. My friend John always hoped that Burma and Pat would settle together. In my mind, Normandie Drake was the love of Pat's life. Here we see Pat and Normandie planning a future that would never come to pass. She would go on to be taken away in the middle of the night and end up marrying the loathsome Sandhurst. I have a later daily from 1937 where even 2 years later Normandie is pining over Pat. The blue wash, cinematography and panel design all come together here to produce the kind of daily that only the Rembrandt of Comics could have.

I've always been fascinated by Caniff's blue washes. Wonderful example of this classic strip!

Both are superb examples, but what was the purpose of the blue washes, and what medium was used? I've never completely understood this.
